Students thankful for Loan Repayment Moratorium

For Immediate Release

March 18, 2020

Edmonton, AB - University students in Alberta are thankful the Government of Alberta is placing a moratorium on payments for Alberta Student Loans as well as returning all loans to interest free status for six months.

“This moratorium on interest and payments for Alberta Students Loans will greatly benefit graduates who are in repayment,” stated Sadiya Nazir, Chair of the Council of Alberta University Students. “While this is a temporary measure, this will allow families more flexibility with their upcoming expenses during these difficult times.

“We are calling on the Government of Alberta to continue to support students who may be disproportionately affected by the circumstances,” stated Bailey Harry, Vice Chair of the Council of Alberta University Students. “Students may not be able to gain employment over the summer; this will impact their ability to afford their tuition and fees in the fall. All of our current students should not face barriers with degree completion and we are working to raise all concerns to the government.”

This change to the Alberta Student Loan Program follows a similar change announced by the Federal Government to the Canada Student Loan Program. For six months, starting March 30, 2020, Alberta Student Loan borrowers will not be charged interest nor be expected to make a payment.
