Alberta’s Post-Secondary Students Appeal for a Temporary Freeze on Rental Evictions

The post-secondary students of Alberta call for the Government of Alberta to suspend the enforcement of eviction notices caused by delayed payment due to the COVID-19 pandemic for 90 days. Starting on March 30th, 2020, a temporary freeze on eviction enforcement due to delayed payment would support Albertans, especially post-secondary students, who are falling short on rent payments as a result of job loss or mandatory social isolation.

The decision would align with the recent announcement that the province of Ontario has also delayed the enforcement of eviction proceedings resulting from the COVID-19 outbreak.

This temporary freeze in evictions would be a stop-gap measure designed to allow federal and provincial support funds to reach Albertans.

Alberta’s post-secondary students are committed to working with the Government of Alberta, institutions, and all post-secondary stakeholders in supporting all Albertans through the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency.
